Welfare reform is gathering pace in Northern Ireland, in particular with imminent changes to the way decisions can be appealed and the beginning of transfer from DLA to Personal Independence Payment.

23 May - Introduction of Mandatory Reconsideration and Direct Lodgement of appeals

31 May - Introduction of the Benefit Cap and also of regulations for supplementary payments for those who will be disadvantaged by the Benefit Cap and by ESA changes. See: SR.No.178/2016

20 June - DLA abolished for new claims and replaced by Personal Independence Payment. Start of “natural reassessment” of existing DLA claimants for PIP.

Last month, Law Centre (NI) social security advisers teamed up with Tar Isteach to deliver information sessions to over 200 people on how welfare reform will affect local communities throughout Belfast (photo above).

Our legal advisers also updated the Welfare Reform Group (photo below), an umbrella organisation of local voluntary sector agencies, as well as advisers at our recent Social Security Practitioners Meeting.
