First Mayor of Derry and Strabane visits Law Centre

First Mayor of Derry and Strabane visits Law Centre's Western Area Office

Councillor Elisha McCallion, First Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, paid a visit to the Law Centre's Western Area office on 18 June.

The new First Mayor met with Law Centre staff and with Mrs Jane Dunton, a former client of the Centre’s Community Care Legal Advice Service.

Glenn Jordan, Law Centre (NI) Director, said: “We were delighted to welcome the First Mayor of Derry and Strabane to the Law Centre’s Western Area Office.  This meeting was a great opportunity to share concerns and ideas about social welfare issues faced by our clients and Councillor McCallion’s constituents.”

Mrs Dunton explained that, when Slievemore Nursing Unit was due to close earlier this year, herself and the families of the other remaining patients were very concerned about the future of their loved ones. The families sought advice from the Law Centre and mediation was arranged with the Health and Social Care Trust. The families were relieved that a mutually satisfactory arrangement was reached and that their relatives were safely transferred to an alternative care facility in Derry.

Mrs Dunton said: “When our family group met with Caroline Cooley at the Law Centre, we always came away feeling empowered to carry on with our campaign. Her advice at the final stages was particularly invaluable.”
